Being a pianist all of my life, this encompasses so many emotions for me. The song with the same title, the contrast of/and my love for all things black and white, and the fact that I am so intrigued by these intelligent, mischievous birds, made this title a no-brainer for me.

Armstrong is a piece dedicated to the white moose, inspired by the rare recessive gene strain discovered by Jane Armstrong in Ontario. This painting captures the beauty of these protected creatures, distinguished by their partial loss of pigmentation but not the telltale red eyes of albinism. Armstrong is a tribute to the unique and precious aspects of nature, inviting viewers to reflect on the importance of conservation and the enchanting allure of extraordinary within the ordinary.

My creative process often involves extensive research into the animals that I portray. While searching for a perfect title for this painting of a magnificent 6-point bull elk, I discovered that such a creature is known as a "Royal". This discovery, coupled with a personal connection, led me to the final title. My 91-year old mother-in-law, who also happens to be my greatest art fan, has a fondness for Crown and Seven. In her honor, and with a nod to the elk's regal nature, I named this piece "Crown Royal."

"Luna," the spirit of the night. This piece delves into the mystical bond between the moon and the wolf, capturing the essence of nocturnal harmony. Though folklore often intertwines the wolf's howl with the lunar cycle, the reality reveals a deeper, more nuanced connection: wolves communicate through howls, weaving a tapestry of sound that resonates through the twilight hours. Yet, in this piece, I embrace the enchanted allure of myth, choosing to believe in the wolf's moonlit serenade, celebrating the magic that lies in the realm of imagination.

Giraffe populations are declining at an alarming rate. Habitat loss, poaching, urbanization and drought are all contributing factors. For the first time, the US Fish & Wildlife Service is proposing federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. In 2020, poachers killed a mother and 7-mth old calf, two of only three living white giraffes in Kenya, at the Hirola Community Conservatory. One white giraffe remains in the park, an adult male, and it may be the last white giraffe in the world. The white giraffes have a condition called leucism, which causes a partial loss of skin pigmentation. This piece was made in their honor.

This painting began as a quiet echo of the film Powder, a story about otherness, sensitivity and the burden of being seen too clearly. The white lion stands as a symbol of that liminal space: powerful yet vulnerable, luminous yet isolated. Its bright blue eyes hold an unsettling calm, a gaze that feels both ancient and exposed. Like its namesake, Powder is not about spectacle, but presence. It asks the viewer to slow down, to meet the eyes without flinching, and to consider the quiet strength that lives inside those who exist outside the norm. The lion does not roar. It simply is.

ECHOES OF THE SAVANNAH

By moving in tight on the zebra’s face, I wanted to dissolve the idea of pattern as decoration and let it become identity. The stripes stop being graphic and start feeling emotional, imperfect, alive. Each one carries tension and balance at the same time, much like the way we hold our own histories.

The eye is meant to draw the viewer in to the quiet intelligence there, and the way it anchors all of the movement. For me, this piece is about listening. About the subtle echoes we carry from the places that shape us, even when we’re far from them. The Savannah isn’t shown, but it’s present, living in the lines, the contrast, and the stillness between them.

RHIANNON

I titled this piece "Rhiannon", inspired by Stevie Nick's enchanting song, and my daughter's love for her music and horses. I was intrigued by the mystical origins of the name, tracing back to the novel "Triad" and the revelation of Rhiannon as a powerful deity, and the Welsh goddess of steeds. The white horse embodies the spirit of Rhiannon, and is a tribute to the enduring magic of music and mythology, intertwined with a personal touch of familial affection.
